Wound Dressings

Our wound dressings mainly comprise non-adherent dressing pad, adhesive wound dressing, wound plaster, and so on. These dressings contact directly with wounds, so they have to be hypoallergenic, sterilized, and individually packed. The part that contacts the wound surface must be non-adherent and absorbent, so the dressings can absorb much blood, lymph, and interstitial fluid, keeping the wound dry and clean. Generally, the dressings will be used with adhesive tapes.

Tips
1. Patient situation assessment
It is quite important that the patients accept the dressings physically, mentally, and economically. Some patients may show different degrees of allergy symptom due to the individual difference, while someone cannot stand the smell of some dressings like hydrocolloid and alginic acid salt. Some patients have special requirements for comfort and convenience. The new type wound dressings are relatively more expensive but they need less changing times. In a word, the final choice should be based on the patient situation assessment.

2. Wound situation assessment
The wounds that can be healed by the first intention should be tended with gauze, or film products; shallow wounds could be taken care of by film products; hydrocolloid is suitable for wounds with small or medium amount of exudate; hydrogel and hydrocolloid are ideal dry and necrotic wound caring products.

3. Dynamic assessment
The continuously changing wounds should be assessed at a certain interval. Then we can know if we are using the right wound dressings in the right way.

It is hard to determine which kind of medical dressing is the best, because the dressing could be highly effective to someone but not that desirable for the rest. We should take the individual difference into consideration when we are choosing the dressings. These products could be used dynamically and jointly.
